つい最近、古代ギリシアが舞台の漫画
『ヒストリエ』を読んでいて、
その中で奴隷として働いていた人が
奴隷から解放され自由民となったときに
こんなことを言っていました。

「自由の重さと軽さを
存分に味わっています」
＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝
「自由」と聞くと
いろんなものから解放されて
軽そうなイメージがありそうですが、
そこに「重さ」があると言ったのです。
僕はこのコマを読んだとき、
「何も予定がない休日にも当てはまるな」と思いました。
やらなきゃいけないことがあれば、
確かに自由ではないかもしれません。
予定の内容にもよると思いますが、
どちらかと言うと「苦しさ」に近いと思います。
ですが、やらなきゃいけないことがある、
なにか課題がある、命令されたことがある、
というのは、表面的には「苦しさ」に見えて
実は「楽（ラク）」なのです。
なぜなら、
＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝
自分でやることを考えなくてもいいから。
＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝＝
『アルスラーン戦記』という小説の中で、
奴隷制の廃止を考えている王子が
とあるお城に訪れたときに
そこにいた奴隷を解放するシーンがあります。
王子は、きっと自由になれて喜ぶだろうと
善意からの行動のつもりでした。
ですが、実際はどうなったのか？
なんと、奴隷たちはむしろ
「勝手なことをするな！」と怒りだしたのです。
そして、横にいた王子の軍の戦略家が
「自由になりたがっている奴隷ばかりではないのです」
と示唆しました。
この理由というのも、
奴隷たちは確かに自由ではないし、
むしろ外から見れば過酷な労働をさせられて
可哀想に見えるわけですが、
かといって、自由になったらなったで
自分たちで「やること」を考えないといけないし、
誰にも命令されない分、
自分で自分に責任を負うことになるのです。
ですので、「なんとなく生きていければいい」
くらいの思いしかない者にとっては
自由民よりも奴隷でいた方が「楽」なんです。
自由を望むなら、
その重さとも向き合わないといけないから。
『ヒストリエ』の中で、
「野蛮人には奴隷に向いてる人間が多いのだ」
というようなセリフがありましたが、
ここも考えさせられるシーンでした。
表面的な言葉だけ見ると
「なんてヒドいことを言うんだ！」
と思うかもしれませんが、
これを「ヒドい言葉」とだけで片付けるのは
浅い理解になってしまうかと思います。
そして、日本には今は奴隷制はありませんが、
構造としては似てる部分もあるように思います。
すごく考えさせられる言葉だったので
紹介させていただきました。
